Research on the history, ecology, and design of folk houses:A review of the literature on seaweed houses in China

Ecological folk houses which are formed under the influence of local climate, topographic features, and regional resources, generally environmentally friendly energy-saving with low-carbon emissions. They conform to habits behavior patterns. The study ecological provides a valuable reference for sustainable development houses. One world’s most representative houses, “seaweed house”,was selected as object this study. A comprehensive review research on seaweed was carried out in Jiaodong Peninsula China regarding their origins, historical development, structure, strategies, conservation situation based bibliographic survey more than 100 references over last thirty years. findings suggest that: (1) have very high value is mainly reflected ecology, culture, region; (2) strategies such material characteristics granite, roof slope, volume factor, layout house courtyard key influencing factors warmth winter coolness summer; (3) reduction materials, unsustainable thatching skills, preference young people modern three main reasons rapid decline houses; (4) cultural excavation, economic optimization Thus, paper proposes possible future application directions.
